This trip to Fort Union had started on August 4, but it was late October by this time. The crew had travelled more than 600 miles each way, and a good day's drive was often about 20 miles, so it is not surprising that it took a lot of time. In his trail diary Frank refers to the Arkansas river being full of ice at this spot. The crew would not reach home until the beginning of November.
